Gamuda ups scholarship fund to US$9m for 206 scholars

What happened
Gamuda Bhd has increased its 2026 scholarship allocation to US$9 million (RM39 million) for 206 scholars, up from US$7 million (RM31 million) in 2025. The scholars were selected from 4,096 applicants, representing the top 5% of the applicant pool.
The announcement coincides with Gamuda's 50th anniversary and the 30th year of the Gamuda Scholarship under Yayasan Gamuda.
Why it matters
Gamuda Group Managing Director Lin Yun Ling said talent is the single most critical asset for nation-building and business expansion. The programme aims to widen access to quality higher education for young leaders regardless of financial background.
Nearly 80% of this year's scholars come from B40 and M40 households, while 15% are from East Malaysia and indigenous communities. The scholarship is designed to bring diverse perspectives, fresh ideas and technical capabilities into the organisation.
Impact on Malaysia
Gamuda's scholarship programme directly supports Malaysia's talent development goals. It provides fully funded overseas scholarships, with 23 scholars attending institutions like Imperial College London, University of Cambridge, and National University of Singapore.
The programme has become a long-term talent pipeline for Gamuda. Half of the Group's top 30 business leaders today began their careers as Gamuda scholars, with alumni progressing into directorships in their late 20s and early 30s.
Regional expansion
Gamuda is expanding across nine international markets. Returning scholars are expected to contribute across engineering, infrastructure, property development and digital technology.
As AI reshapes engineering and operational workflows, the scholarship programme will focus on developing leaders with strategic judgement, critical thinking and technical expertise. The Group aims to equip future leaders to manage both human and technological capabilities.
Long-term strategy
The scholarship reflects Gamuda's view that talent is critical to both nation-building and business expansion. The Group combines global exposure with operational experience to prepare leaders for increasingly complex regional challenges.
By increasing its investment in scholarships, Gamuda is building a pipeline of future leaders. The programme ensures top global and local exposure for young leaders regardless of financial background.
What's next
Gamuda will continue to select scholars annually, with the next intake expected to open in 2027. The Group will monitor the progress of current scholars and alumni as they take on roles in the company's expanding regional operations.
The scholarship programme will adapt its focus to meet evolving industry needs, particularly in areas affected by digital transformation and AI integration.
